The Multimodal Operator is a pivotal role within the freight forwarding department, responsible for managing end-to-end international shipments across Ocean, Air, and Road freight modes. This position handles both import and export operations, ensuring that cargo is transported efficiently, cost-effectively, and in full compliance with international trade regulations. The successful candidate will act as the primary point of contact for clients, overseas agents, carriers, and customs authorities, delivering exceptional customer service and operational excellence from the point of booking through to final delivery.
Key Responsibilities
The Multimodal Operator is tasked with a comprehensive range of duties that span the entire lifecycle of a shipment. The core responsibilities include:
End-to-End Shipment Management. The operator will manage the full lifecycle of import and export shipments across sea, air, and road transport. This involves receiving booking instructions from clients, securing space with shipping lines, airlines, and hauliers, and coordinating the physical movement of goods from origin to destination. The role requires meticulous tracking of shipments and proactive problem-solving to mitigate any delays or disruptions in the supply chain.
Documentation and Compliance: A critical aspect of the role is the preparation, processing, and verification of all necessary shipping documentation. This includes Bills of Lading (B/L), Air Waybills (AWB), CMRs for road freight, Commercial Invoices, and Packing Lists. The operator must ensure strict adherence to international shipping regulations and compliance standards. Furthermore, the role involves coordinating customs clearance processes, ensuring that all import and export declarations are accurate and submitted in a timely manner to avoid penalties or delays.
Commercial and Financial Duties: The Multimodal Operator is responsible for negotiating spot rates with carriers and hauliers to maximize profitability while maintaining competitive pricing for clients. The role includes providing accurate quotations to customers, managing job costing, accruing costs accurately within the freight management system (e.g., CargoWise), and ensuring timely and accurate invoicing to clients upon job completion.
Customer Service and Relationship Management: Delivering high-quality customer service is paramount. The operator will provide clients with regular, proactive updates on their shipment statuses and address any queries or concerns promptly. Building and maintaining strong relationships with overseas agents, transport providers, and internal stakeholders is essential for ensuring smooth operations and fostering business growth.
