Air & Ocean Import Operator
Overview
An established freight forwarder is growing its import team. They need an Import Operator to handle air and ocean shipments, with some rail freight too. You'll own each job from arrival to final delivery and billing. You'll work closely with carriers, overseas partners, hauliers and UK customers.
Experience in either air or ocean imports is welcome. Full training will be given on the other modes, including rail. This is a great chance to broaden your skills and grow your career.
What you'll do
- Run import jobs from start to finish across air, ocean and rail
- Track flight, vessel and rail arrivals, and monitor key milestones
- Keep customers updated, especially when delays or changes happen
- Deal with problems quickly, such as short shipments, damage or missed connections
- Work with airlines, shipping lines and rail operators to secure release of cargo
- Coordinate with overseas offices and agents on documents and pre-alerts
- Book UK hauliers and arrange collection from airports, ports and rail terminals
- Arrange customs clearance and prepare import paperwork
- Check documents are accurate and meet HMRC requirements
- Manage port and terminal charges, storage and any demurrage or detention risks
- Cost each job accurately and raise customer invoices
- Check every shipment is profitable
- Keep system records clear and up to date
- Support the wider team with general import admin
What you'll bring
- Proven import experience in air or ocean freight
- Rail experience is a bonus, not essential
- Understanding of UK customs clearance and import paperwork
- Strong organisation and the ability to manage several shipments at once
- Clear, confident communication with customers, carriers and partners
- A calm approach to fixing problems under pressure
- Good attention to detail, especially on costs and invoices
- Comfortable using freight systems and Microsoft Office
